PDO Threads: A Quick Lift

Did you know there’s a way to lift and smooth the look of loose or sagging skin that doesn’t involve surgery? They’re called PDO threads and they’re minimally invasive, quick, and can take years off your face instantly. They help provide lift for things like jowls, the neckline, eyebrows, and even your nose! They can also be used to plump up thinning skin. PDO stands for polydioxanone. Polydioxanone is an absorbable material that doctors have used for years in cardiothoracic surgery. The body absorbs polydioxanone threads in 4 to 6 months and remarkably leaves behind no scar tissue. So, how does it work for the face? After a local anesthetic or numbing cream takes effect, our nurse practitioner, Ashley Pontenberg preloads a thread into a hypodermic needle or cannula. She inserts the needle or cannula into the skin, and as she removes it, the thread stays behind. There are several types of threads, each uniquely suited to a particular task. The smooth thread is injected in a “net” or “mesh” formation. For example, three smooth threads might be placed horizontally and three vertically. As the skin heals itself around the threads, it creates new collagen; which results in naturally tighter, thicker and firmer skin over time.

Barbed threads might sound a little scary, but they work wonders! These threads have “barbs” to provide grip under your skin. Ashley will inject the thread and then pull it tight to reposition your skin. You leave your appointment with instant, often dramatic results. And just like with the smooth threads, your body begins the process of building collagen around the thread, securing the lift. Picture the thread as a scaffolding that’s in place while your skin is repairing and rebuilding itself. Once the scaffolding is “removed” (or dissolves in this case) the underlying tissue has repaired itself to hold the re-positioned skin in place on its own. Amazing! What’s happening in the underlying tissues of the face after these threads are injected is called “selective inflammatory response.” Inserting the thread initiates a repair process under the skin. The fancy word for this process is neocollagenesis, which means the formation of new collagen. More collagen is what we’re all after. Because new collagen takes up to six months to grow, you’ll see the results from your PDO thread treatment gradually get better and better over that period. It’s crucial to seek out a highly skilled practitioner before you undergo a PDO thread treatment. These threads can do amazing things; but, they’re only as good as the hands that deploy them. I cannot stress this point enough. In the wrong hands, you will not get the results you are after, or worse, things could go wrong.

Ashley Pontenberg is a certified Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, Master Level Injector and is certified to do Non-Surgical PDO Threads (among many other things). She also has a great deal of experience with threads.

PDO threads are nothing short of miraculous. Many people will find that they need much less facial filler thanks to the lift that threads can achieve. A “PDO thread lift” can eliminate or substantially delay more invasive procedures. They also work great on the neck and body.
